Daasi Dishes: Kichdi aka Lentil Rice Dish

A reader asked me for the recipe of this dish.
When I  need a hot  vegan/vegetarian comfort dish that is easy to prepare and flavorful, I always fall back on this time tested dish.

Khichdi

Ingredients

1cup  basmati rice
1/2 cup split green moong dal (or mung as it is called in English)
4 cloves
1/2 inch cinnamon
1 tsp cumin seeds,
1 onion sliced,
1tbsp olive oil and
2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter),
11/2 teaspoons salt (Or as needed)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
2/12 cups water

Recipe

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil, add cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon and saute for a few secs, then add sliced onions and saute till onions turn translucent.
  2. Wash the dal and rice together and drain the water.
  3. Add it in the onion mixture and saute all of them for 2-3 min.
  4. Finally add water, turmeric and salt and pressure cook (you can pour the mixture in rice cooker and cook it that way too)
  5. While serving top the hot khichdi with a little bit of ghee. Enjoy this mouthwatering rustic dish with hot Indian pickles and/or plain yogurt

      Three whistles should do it.
